Rahui
A 'Rahui' (temporary closure) has been established over a small portion of the coastline on the north side of the Kaikoura Peninsula, located more or less between the wharf near Wakatu Quay and the 'Old Wharf' opposite Fyffe House.
The map shows the boundaries of the Rahui which extends out toward some small islets offshore.
This is similar in some ways to a marine reserve in that fishing, removal of rock lobster or any shellfish is strictly prohibited for the time that the Rahui remains in place.
People are allowed to use the area recreationally and there is some pleasant snorkelling to be had if the sea conditions are clear.
