Coast South of Kaikoura
When heading South make sure you visit the Kaikoura Winery with its fantastic array of books and souvenirs, along with Award wining food and wine. Enjoy a World class glass of pinot overlooking the beauty of South Bay.

South of Peketa is the Kahutara River, famous for its whitebait fishing at the river mouth and its pumping surf in a South swell. Not a surf spot for beginners!
The Coastal drive from Peketa to Oaro is classed as the best in New Zealand for scenery, wildlife and spectacular diving of the beach. Take your time… the speed limit is 80kmh for a reason.
For families and travelers looking for a fantastic day out, the walk from Oaro to Haumauri Bluffs cannot be beaten. Park your car at the south end of the Oaro passing lane and walk across the Oaro River and down the Coast. Past the old steam train wreck and around the seemingly endless little bays, which offer fantastic swimming and snorkeling opportunities. It’s approximately 2 hours walk to the Haumauri Bluffs so pack a lunch, take plenty of water and don’t forget your sunscreen. Low tide access only.
